Close to a discount grocery. In the heart of the old city.
AC not very powerful. No free overnight parking.

Nîmes is small so the hotel is close to the tourist bit and across the road from a carrefour. It is getting a weee bit away from the station.
But there were a few downsides. The man on reception didn’t speak English, which is fine (I’m not one of THOSE people) but he claimed to not understand my French. My French is not that bad when I’m talking phrase book and standard questions: I got a questioning look when I asked for plain coffee, which I had to elaborate as with no milk or sugar, for breakfast and again when I asked for a glass of tap water. Trying to establish whether I’d settled my bill in full when I checked out was a bit of an ordeal. I had no idea what was going on.
The other downside for me was, I’m afraid, the other guests. It’s a very small hotel and people have to take the stairs as there’s no lift (another point to bear in mind if you have any luggage that’s remotely heavy, because you’ll need your own muscle power). For some reason, all the other guests seemed to bellow as they climbed the one or two flights. No idea why.
Be quiet people.
To be fair, the hotel is also at fault about this, as they need a few little posters here and there asking everyone to be more considerate and make less noise.
Nearly excellent.

Clean room, good space, French speaking guests only may be preferred
There was a French breakfast on offer (coffee, a glass of juice, a croissant, pain au chocolat, yogurt, slice of cheese and dried fruits). I think they were reasonable value but I’m not 100% certain how much I was charged.
However, I had a couple of niggles.
Firstly, there is no lift. I had a heavy suitcase. I managed it, but the steps turn and are quite narrow and it’s not my favourite hobby manoeuvring suitcases.
Secondly, the hotel is very small with only one staircase, so if you are on the 1st floor like I was, you can hear everyone going up and down the stairs. (I imagine you could hear them whatever floor you were on.). Management could have been a bit more proactive here, with a polite sign or two reminding guests that they should try not to disturb everyone else and maybe lay off shouting at each other.
I’m not sure what the deal was with the guy behind the desk, but for some reason I had problems communicating normal questions/answers with him. He may have been one of those French people who “don’t speak English” on principle (my French teacher was like that at school and insisted on very strange French words for well known terms like hoover and Walkman and shopping and weekend), but I was genuinely trying to speak French and he still seemed to have a problem understanding me or helping me out. People are usually impressed I’ve tried, even though it is either invariably gibberish I’ve just come out with or a string of please and thank yous.
He didn’t seem to use universal words like “passport” or have repertoire of mime to assist. I’m just grateful I didn’t need his help and I’m not convinced I’m the only non-French native who’s ever stayed there. It’s not great for people travelling alone to feel like they aren’t worth trying to assist. That was somehow how it came across. I may be being unfair but when I feel like I have to get a proper phrase book out so we can communicate at all, it’s disappointing.
