Overall hotel room & atmosphere are nice. Service should improve

The overall hotel room atmosphere are nice. However the service should be improve, I have ankle sprain and the front staff (the old man front staff) was not helping with the luggage at all. Please have more service mind in according to the hotel price

Not the best choice if you’re going to Kyoto with elderly or children.

Service: staffs are mostly blunt except for a few who were helpful during our stay. I understand Japanese culture is very particular but for me it is still unacceptable. For example they were going to charge us for extra bottle of water because we need more for the baby. There was also no help with the luggages when we were leaving. Several time we felt very unwelcome.
Restaurant: Japanese breakfast is nice, but again because of the lack of service, I felt very pressured rushing to finish every morning because they would come in every 5 min to check whether they can take away the dishes. There is only one restaurant with no in-room dining, so do not expect you can casually dine in or order in-room dining if you arrive late on your first day, which was the case for us, we have to find a restaurant nearby to eat when we arrive at 7, with 2 elderly and a baby, which was very tiring after a long trip.
Location: only 7 mins away from Kiyomizu-dera, which is a popular tourist spot. It is located in on a small street so cabs usually take longer time to get in and out because of traffic jam during day time on one-way streets.
Room: the room is clean and decent, we stayed on the first floor with private bath which was quite nice, except for the one thing - we reported that the AC was dripping but they never fixed it. We had to use a bucket for bath to hold the dripping water so the carpet wasn’t soaked.
Overall we have stayed in many types of hotels in different places in Japan, this is definitely the bottom of the list.

Formal and nice

The hotel itself is great! We had some issues at checkin where my cousin had booked our room for 2 kids and 1 adult but both kids were already considered adults because they are over 6. Since it was just one night for us, it wasn't too bad but made for a slightly unpleasant checkin experience. The hotel seemed pretty formal. When you checkin, they don't have you stand around at the counter, they have you sit on the couch in the sitting area and have water, tea, and dorayaki while they prepare the paperwork and bring it over. Also when they walk by, they bow to you, not just when you come in, but I am sitting on the couch and they walk by, they bow. Also My cousin checked in before us and I wanted to leave some things in her room so I wouldn't have to move it around and they got down to asking for my passport and telling me I couldn't go to her room.
The room itself is great! With 3 "adults", they set up an extra bed for us. They have yukatas that you can wear outside, with slippers too! On the third floor, they also have a lounge with snacks and drinks and tea and coffee. We had breakfast one morning and it was american/continental style vs japanese/traditional and it was a lot of food! No kids meals of course so we couldn't finish.
The hotel is in Higashiyama. We walked to Kyomizudera via Sannenzaka.

Japanese experience similar to a ryokan but in a hotel.

Highly recommend. It is a very Japanese experience, but in more of a hotel venue. Very traditional in that everyone wears Japanese robes and PJs around the property (really cool experience). The meals are uniquely Japanese (breakfast was tremendous)!. The location can't be beat, very walkable to best parts of Kyoto. Staff was great. Rooms were spacious.
