Magnificent MonCham Thailand
It was that period just before winter's chilly winds blow in, when the rains have mostly subsided. I had just accomplished my aim of finishing my studies over the recent Mother's Day holiday. I decided to treat myself to some morning mist therapy as a reward for all my hard work. Although Khao Kho was initially on my itinerary, I changed my mind after seeing an advertisement for a famous resort in Mon Jam, Chiang Mai, while perusing Facebook. With its enchanted northern mist, hot springs, and highly acclaimed Japanese ryokan, the scene appeared to be straight out of a fairy tale. I decided to spend four days and three nights at Onsen@Monjam in Chiang Mai for the four short days off. Unfortunately the mist said hi to us only the first evening after the heavy rains.
The Journey Begins
We departed Bangkok and headed directly to Chiang Mai, pausing for breakfast in Tak and lunch at Wat Phra That Hariphunchai in Lamphun. We got to Mon Jam right on time for check-in at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. Despite its hilly terrain, the route between Mae Rim and Samoeng is currently rather easy to drive. At speeds of 60 to 80 km/h, you will not feel strained. Just watch out for oncoming traffic as you make your way up Mon Jam near Pong Yaeng; there are a few tight and steep spots, but overall, it's not too bad. You should proceed with caution after dark, but there's no reason to be afraid. Traveling in the late afternoon is much more pleasant due to the reduced volume of traffic.
️ Arrival at Onsen@Moncham
A strong rain, almost like a mini-storm, welcomed us. The hours of rain were actually a blessing in disguise because they allowed us to make the most of our room. Our room namely Kyoto is the Imperial Tatami room. The term "room" is too little; it's more akin to a small villa. With no discounts, the price is a bit steep, but it's well worth it when you find a good promotion. The premise had been open for a long time, but it was beautifully kept. Relaxing on the plush tatami mats and Japanese furnishings was like bouncing on a cloud of marshmellow. One standout feature was the room's private onsen. At first, I didn't give it much mind; nevertheless, the resort later informed me that the water is indeed mineral. I have no idea where they get it. You can see outside in the open-view tub, but most of what you see is sky. Soaking in it during a chilly night or morning in the northtern of Thailand in the winter time sounds heavenly though.
The Must-Try Public Onsen
The public onsens are open to all visitors. In keeping with Japanese tradition, there are two wings: the men's area and the females' section. It is customary to undress completely when using the men's bath. Thanks to my good fortune, the entire bath was to myself, allowing me to take images to share with my fanpages. I loved it so much when it rained and I could relax in the hot spring with the cool air surrounding.
Additionally, a private outdoor onsen can be reserved ahead of time. I booked it for two consecutive days, in the morning and the evening. Although I enjoyed both, I found the evening soak to be more relaxing due to the lighting. Also, taking a plunge first thing in the morning is a great way to wake up. Warning: the open-air architecture makes it possible for visitors from higher-up resorts to see you, even if it's private. You should probably wear a bikini unless have a six-pack.
Dining Delights
At this resort that sported the ryokan aesthetic, it didn't let me down. The newspaper-style menu was a charming addition. It was hard to believe how fresh and delicious the shrimp and fish were. Given the challenges of getting ingredients upward, the somewhat high prices are understandable. I opted for the à la carte and the Kurobuta pork steak set instead of the full-course set (kaiseki?) because there was no marketing and some of the items were unappealing to me like hotate and ushin. The steak was excellent, and I highly recommend the three sauces that came with it.
Although the breakfast was quite simplistic, it did provide endless set menus that included great Japanese mainstays like grilled salmon or saba with salt or teriyaki sauce. Foie gras with berry sauce, prepared with berries harvested from the resort's own Mon Berry farm, was a memorable dish. The combo was absolutely mouth-melting, and I can't decide if the foie gras or the berries were the star ingredients. The meal was excellent, and I rate it five stars overall.
Spa Experience
I went to the spa after relaxing in the private onsen. The goods and massage abilities were excellent, although the prices were a bit pricey (sorry, no promo for me). True experts in the field of spa medicine, the therapists were both men and women.
Service That Shines
Many establishments have subpar service, regardless of how stunning the resort is or how tasty the cuisine. As soon as I arrived, I was impressed by the level of service I received. Special promos were helped by the personnel even before I arrived. Upon arrival, every member of the staff was kind and helpful in a variety of ways: showing us about the resort, suggesting restaurants, assisting with parking on busy days, and listing off surrounding activities. Onsen@Monjam is a must-visit resort that guarantees a wonderful trip because of its outstanding personnel.
I assure you, I will return the following time to test out one of the supposedly standard rooms which other guests complimented it extrodinary either. Thanks for reading!

Thank you very much for your magnificent review. The way you described your journey and stay with us is truly beautiful — almost like reading a travel article. Your words perfectly capture the essence of Onsen @ Moncham, and we feel grateful that you shared such a heartfelt reflection.
We are delighted that you enjoyed the serene atmosphere, our onsen experience, the dining, and above all, the warm service of our team. These are exactly the experiences we wish to create for every guest.
Just to kindly clarify, Mon Barree is not owned by the hotel but is a wonderful social enterprise in the area. We are always proud to support their products and share them with our guests as part of the Mon Cham experience.
Your review not only inspires our team but also invites others to discover this tranquil retreat in the mountains. We would be truly honored to welcome you back again — perhaps to experience one of our other room types or a different season, when the scenery takes on a whole new charm.
With warm regards,

Take an onsen soak in the middle of the canyon, ️ like warp goes to Japan.
We stayed at the Imperial Tatami Onsen Suite.
Inside the Japanese-style room, it’s equipped with all the amenities, and the space in the room is very wide, and the proportion is perfect.Highlight of this room is the large bathtub to soak onsen.
♪ Here, the highlights are the onsen soaking, the collective (male-female) and private onsen soaking, inspired by Japan, including waterfalls, hot tubs, cold tubs and private bathrooms, etc.
