Great value for money in the heart of the Medina

Terrible!
"Where did you find this place, my God?" This is just the beginning. After arriving to the house, the room was as pictured, but my Tunisian friend had already called ahead to assure that the room was very clean. Not so long after arriving we get a knock at the door, mind you after over 15 hours in the air from my flight, I was exhausted, this is why I booked the room near the airport, to nap before heading to my actual destination. The owner, insisted on copies of identification, she also wanted a marriage certificate, (who carries a marriage doc?) again she insisted on another copy of our documents as previous one was “not a clear copy” that she had made. After not being able to provide a marriage document, she asked for more money by upgrading the room, so we then could stay. Three times she came banging on the door. We ended up leaving, NO REST! The owner is a scammer! After the fact, my friend said they would kill for one Tunisian dinar in that area, it’s not safe.

Style over substance
We arrived before check-in & were allowed to have our room. We were told the guest before had just left so it did make us wonder about the quality of the housekeeping if they could turn the room over so quickly.
While waiting, we were given some juice & tea, which was a nice touch.
The room itself was small, with most of the space taken up by the bed. The door knob was hanging loose & the lock didn't seem robust.
There is no space either side of the bed & the lounger is right in front, so it might be challenging to climb over for those with mobility issues.
The cleanliness of the place wasn't the best, and the floor & carpet seemed grimey. There was a fake eye lash left behind the bathroom door, near where the shower was. So much for housekeeping.
There was a grimey rug on the bathroom floor which didn't look like it had been replaced & was meant to be the bath mat.
The was no shower gel, only shampoo & a soap. There was a hairdryer in the room, which was helpful.
The dar has central heating & underfloor heating which was nice in the cool weather. There is also an air con which we didn't need to use while there.
The TV did not work. We were told it only worked with WiFi (which didn't make sense as they had WiFi though admittedlyit didn't work all the time) & then later told there was an issue with the TV - they clearly couldn't get the excuse straight.
Only one roll of toilet paper was provided & there was no cleaning so the bin (only in the bathroom) was pretty full after our stay.
The worst thing about the room was it was just not functional. There are no hooks or storage space space for towels & clothes, so we had to hang our towels over the top of the bathroom door.
There was a wooden chest under the TV with a grimey looking quilt in it & it's slanted so you can't place bottles or drinks on it as it might spill.
The was no separation between the shower & bathroom so it was easy to get things wet. The shower knobs were stiff so even when turned to a regular shower head rather than the rain shower (which would have created a lot more splash), the tap was flowing as well, so the pressure of the water was poor.
Breakfast is late, at 8 am, & we only ate there once. It was the start of Ramadan so most shops were closed. We were served yoghurt, fried egg, salad & a jam & butter on the side with no bread, but a few slices of cake.
We were also given coffee & tea bags, plus hot water, but no cups. When we asked for bread, they said Tunis is a ghost town (as shops are closed). Perhaps they shouldn't have served jam & butter if there was not going to be bread?
Though bakeries didn't look open, supermarkets were & there is such a thing as planning ahead & buying other types of bread in advance.
Some times when we returned, the front door was locked & once they seemed to be having some kind of photo shoot & had moved a table outside our bedroom door. Perhaps they were more focussed on image rather than running a guesthouse which is actually functioning?
Staff smoked with the dar, so it wasn't great for a place with no natural air.
When we were leaving, the cleaning lady & person who prepared breakfast seemed insistent on getting a taxi for us. Initially she quoted 20 euros then dropped it to 40 dinar.
She followed us out & brought us to where to wait for the cab which took a while due to what she suggested was Ramadan traffic. No doubt she managed to get some commission from this.
We had planned to stay more nights at the dar so we are thankful we did not! The room we had was definitely not worth the price point. As it's in the medina, it might feel a bit creepy in the evenings & early mornings when it's dark & shops are closed.
Would we recommend staying at the dar? Certainly not, based on our underwhelming experience.

A truly unique experience in an unpleasant way
The location of this hotel is the middle of Medina which means you have to walk with your baggage’s to the main streets always since it is not accessible by car. It is a nightmare if it rains, the Medina’s floor is always full of rubbish and ponds of dirty water after rains.
This is not the worst part of my stay. We were offered a very large room (suite) upon arrival and it was to our surprise because we only booked a standard room. On the next day morning, we were asked to pack our belongings and move to the standard room we booked. It would have been better if we were told of such information upon arrival so that we can avoid unpacking our luggage on the previous night. The arrangement was very weird since only 2 of the 5 rooms were occupied during our whole stay. We doubted the necessity of room changing.
Next, we were not sure why the portion of breakfast on the first morning was so tiny, we felt like we did not have any food after finishing the breakfast. The breakfast became normal on the next few days and we have no complaints on the breakfast anymore.
Next, the male staff was quite rude and could not communicate well in English. We were not given the right room key after moving to our new room on the 2nd day and he shouted at us saying he could do nothing and we should wait until the next morning, his manager would give us the right key. Such manager has never showed up during our stay.
On the next morning, of course, as expected we could not get our room key. Eventually we packed our belongings and left the hotel with our room unlocked as we booked a private tour and we must leave.
When we returned to the hotel in the evening, we received the room key but the door lock was not functioning very well. Anyway, we could still lock the room afterwards.
What’s more, hotel building and the room deteriorated quite obviously. A number of the facilities are broken or not well maintained. For example, only 2 light bulbs of the chandelier worked in the suite (1st room given) and the mattress in the 2nd room bend obviously in the middle. No room cleaning service offered during our stay, no towel replacement as well. No hair dryers in the hotel was another nightmare, it is ridiculous to have not even 1 hair dryer which anyone has hair would need it.
I have written too much but I was really quite upset about my 4 night stay at this hotel. Highly not recommend this hotel. Look for other places else, staying at the middle of Medina is not a good idea.
